COMMON MEDICAL CONDITIONS

Instructions for some common Haitian medical conditions:

Goiter

Treat with Lugol’s solution. (This is very inexpensive and they can ask for it at any pharmacy in Port-au-Prince.)

Instructions:  Put 1 drop in 4 cups of water that has been boiled. Then drink one cup per week every week for as long as it takes. This may take a year or more but will eventually shrink the goiter.

Scabies

Treat with benzoate solution. Give 2 oz. to an adult and 1 oz to a child. They are to wipe it all over their body from neck down and let dry. Then they leave it on overnight and wash it off the next morning. This is a one time treatment but they will continue to itch for a week or two. Explain that this is normal. They may repeat in one week if no improvement at all.

Worms

Treat with albendazole 500 mg. Instruct them to chew one tablet now and give them a drink of water. It is not a bad idea to treat the whole family.

Malaria

For acute and symptomatic (fever, night sweats, dehydration) treat with Chloroquine 1 GM and then 500 mg 6, 24 and 48 hours later. For pregnant persons who do not have symptoms but you are wanting prophylaxis use:  500 mg each week X 4 weeks in 2nd and 3rd trimester.

Tinea capis and other chronic fungal infections

Treat with Griseofulvin 500 mg po each day for 30 days. Never give to a pregnant patient!
Can be used in conjunction with anti-fungal creams.
