April Updates

Dear Ones,

What an exciting time we are having in Haiti! After so many years of dreaming, planning, and fundraising, we have finally begun construction on the brand new Carrie Wortham Birth Center, located in the village of Fombrun. This has been such a long time coming, and is the result of innumerable hours of hard work by so many people. While we still have money to raise for a solar system, a well and electrical wiring, we have enough to get this party started!

You may remember from other communications that the land itself was a gift to us, from the village. We have been running a community clinic in the area for several years now and have a beautiful relationship with the families there. To deepen this bond, we asked the people to form a Citizens Advisory Committee, to be sure that we are on the right track, and to ensure we keep their needs at the forefront of our minds.

This meeting was then followed by a ceremonial groundbreaking, during which the ground was blessed by a spokesperson of the local Christian Church and a priest representing the indigenous Haitian religion. It was a beautiful afternoon, and the optimism and respect was so visible on all sides.

The community clinic at Fombrun has been our busiest, with over 70 women attending every Monday. The birth center will hold clinic three days a week, expanding access and easing the huge workload on our community clinic midwives. We anticipate catching 30-40 babies a month at the center, and this will surely increase as time goes on. This will help some of the overcrowding at Ste Therese Hospital, as low risk women can stay in their local area, and will not have to travel into Hinche for care.

We have also formed a partnership with the Ministry of Public Health and Population, and we are pleased to announce that they will be running a primary care clinic out of our facility. This will greatly improve access to healthcare for the whole area, improving the lives of countless Haitians.

Thank you so much for the support you have given over the years; we could not have begun this project without you. If you wish to assist us in completing the Carrie Wortham Birth Center, you can contribute here: www.midwivesforhaiti.org/donate  We look forward to sharing our progress as we move towards our grand opening this autumn.

Love always,
