July Newsletter 2022

Dear Ones,

Happy summer! We hope you are all staying healthy and well and that the heat is not too bad where you live! We have had a busy time of transition at Midwives for Haiti, and we couldn’t be more excited! Our beloved Clinical Director Perrine is taking a sabatical, so we have welcomed our new interim CD, Auriette. Auriette is Haitian by birth and now resides in Canada when not in Haiti. She comes to us with years of midwifery experience in Haiti, most recently in the Port Au Prince area. We are so excited to work with her!

We are also delighted to welcome our new Education Director, Katie! Katie also comes to us from Port Au Prince where she practiced midwifery at a busy urban birth center. A midwest girl, Katie hails from Missouri by way of Scotland, and we are so lucky to have her combination of pedagological expertise and clinic acumen.

The Carrie Wortham Birth Center is coming along in such a beautiful way. Our magnificent builder, Pherest, is right on track, and even figured out how to give us a large basement room at no extra cost. We are also delighted to announce a new partnership with the Ministry of Public Health and Population; they will be sending a primary care doctor to the birth center 5 days a week to provide general healthcare to all the citizens of Fombrun and its environs. This is a beautiful opportunity for collaboration as we all seek to serve the people in the central plateau.

Our greatest need at the birth center is salary sponsors for our birth center midwives. We have four midwives as well as a driver who will staff this facility, and it is vital that their work is respected and they are paid a living wage. $600 a month covers one midwife’s salary, but the service they provide is truly priceless. Maybe you are part of a group who would like to pool resources! In the past we have had book clubs, houses of worship, community organizations and more sponsor a salary. It’s an easy way to make gigantic impact!

We are also in need of funds to purchase several beds, a filing cabinet and desk, as well as a stove and other kitchen equipment. You can go here to make a quick and easy online donation: www.midwivesforhaiti.org/donate

welcome back volunteers

Of course, we would love to have you come and visit in person!

Our volunteer program is back up and running, for both clinical and non-clinical roles, and we will be doing a volunteer recruitment drive in mid August. Watch our social media for fee discounts, a live Q&A session, and more! We miss our former family of helpers, and look forward to making new volunteer friends. For more information or to fill out an application please go to: https://midwivesforhaiti.org/volunteer-program

And as always, thank you for your support, whether that is a financial contribution, liking our posts on social media, telling our story to your friends, or simply thinking of us as you go about your day. We love having you as a part of our Midwives for Haiti community!

Love,

Jane Drichta
