May is always such a beautiful time in Haiti. In Hinche, the temperature is still mild at night, the faint scent of hibiscus ever present. Bright yellow papillons de San Jean flutter from leaf to leaf, going about their butterfly business, ephemeral reminders to enjoy the beauty all around us. And at Midwives for Haiti, it is time for our Spring campaign.

This year’s campaign is more important than ever. We are in the midst of a major capital project, the creation of the Carrie Wortham Birth Center in Fom Brum. The home of our largest community clinic, Midwives for Haiti has been working in this small rural village for years. When they asked us to build a center for their women, and gifted us a beautiful piece of land, we had to find a way to make this happen!
Construction is proceeding on time, under the supervision of the Fom Brum Citizens Advisory Committee, a group made up of members of the community. Before the project is complete, over 500 local men and women will have contributed their time and expertise as we work together to build this complex. Our Haitian midwives are so looking forward to Opening Day!
This is a huge leap forward for MFH. Longtime supporters know how hard we have worked for a birth center closer to Hinche, where our students can perfect their skills and we can provide loving, evidence based care.
Our 2022 theme reflects this movement. “Midwives in Motion” captures our mindset perfectly. Our students, midwives and community are constantly pushing forward to create the best environment we can, with the resources we have. We look forward to sharing some beautiful content with you on our social media channels. And we encourage you to continue the theme and join our virtual 5K, which can be completed any time during the month of June, you can register below.
