Our Big Reveal! - Midwives For Haiti

Our Big Reveal!

Dear Ones,

We hope you enjoyed the first week of the End of Year Campaign, and our big reveal: the moving of the Carrie Wortham Birth Center!

We know so many of you have fond memories of the Cabestor site, and we know you are going to just love the new location as well. It is a beautiful, large piece of land, which will hardly need any work before we break ground.

We have been providing a weekly community clinic in Fom Brun since 2019; it is one of our busiest clinics, with 70+ women receiving care per week. Our midwives routinely do not get home until after dark, which can be so dangerous in Haiti at the moment. When the CWBC opens, we will be able to increase our capacity and hold clinic every day!

Fom Brun is a small rural community located about an hour away from Ste Therese Hospital in Hinche. This is close enough for a transport in the case of emergency, but far enough away that low risk laboring women often cannot make the trek. This situation is magnified by the current fuel shortage, which we do not expect to end anytime soon. The birth center will alleviate this situation, allowing low risk women to deliver safely with our skilled birth attendants in a warm and loving environment.

Along with routine antenatal care, labor and delivery, and postnatal support, we can also offer family planning services, routine vaccinations, and well baby check-ups. Fom Brun is a small but growing community (you should see the new market they are building!), and this site will have running water and electrical power, two vital elements which our Cabestor site lacked. It is also a more secure site, which is so important as violence levels continue to rise in Haiti.

We are so grateful to Veles Louis and his family for the donation of the land. To have our own space, where we can build exactly to our specifications is a dream come true for MFH.

And we cannot thank Dr. Edwin Wortham V and his family enough for the $25,000 matching donation in honor of the center’s namesake, his daughter Carrie Wortham. Please consider a donation to meet this match, doubling your contribution. This is such an extraordinary gift to the families of Fom Brun, and we are so so grateful to the Worthams.

In this season of goodwill and generosity, we thank you in advance for your support of the brand new Carrie Wortham Birth Center!
